The Guardian's North of England editor, Helen Pidd is part of Cycling UK's 100 Women in Cycling 2019 list not just for her reporting which brings cycling issues to the public's attention, but also for her local campaigning in Manchester.

Regular readers of the Guardian will often have seen Helen's byline attached to stories about cycling and active travel. Her commitment to ensuring there's accurate coverage of cycling across all its spectrums is clearly a passion. Helen said, "Although primarily a news reporter, I write about cycling for the Guardian as much as I can."

For well over a decade, Helen has been at the forefront of the Guardian's coverage of cycling matters. She doesn't just write about cycling, but is also an active member and ride leader of Team Glow, a women-only club, and also once wrote a book aimed at non-lycra wearing, new cyclists called "Bicycle - The Complete Guide to Everyday Cycling."

Although primarily a news reporter, I write about cycling for the Guardian as much as I can.

You only have to read Helen's articles on active travel to see her belief in making the UK a place where anyone, no matter their age, background or ability can cycle safely. She clearly practices what she preaches as she is one of the founders of Walk Ride Greater Manchester, a new walking and cycling campaign.

When asked what she loves about cycling, her words will be something we can all agree on, as Helen said, "It keeps me fit, has made me friends and taken me to all manner of beautiful places."
