Families with special needs children cycle together at Avon Tyrrell

Inclusive cycling at Avon Tyrrell
Having bikes suitable for children with special needs means the whole family can ride together.

At Avon Tyrrell, The UK Youth Outdoor Activity Centre in the New Forest, the staff have been working with Hampshire County Council to provide events as part of their short breaks programme. These events allow families with children with additional needs and their siblings to have a break and take part in a variety of outdoor activities.

As part of these short breaks, families are able to use some of the Centre's adapted, all-inclusive bikes and off-road wheelchairs, both on the cycle tracks and off-site.

According to their feedback, families who have tried the bikes think they are amazing! Parents and children are always surprised to realise they really can go anywhere for a family bike ride, sometimes together for the first time.

Use of the all-inclusive bikes is not restricted to the Centre's weekend events; the 65 acre site has a number of cycle tracks and locally there are specifically designed routes in and around the New Forest incorporating local interests such as Holmsley airfield and Burley village, all suitable for these adapted bikes.
