Cycling routes in Berwick
Cycling UK member Tony Houghton, founder of recently-formed Berwick Cyclists, an affiliate group of Cycling UK, has been championing cycling on both sides of the English/Scottish border for many years. The new group is setting a precedent in promoting cycling in the local area. A recent article in the local paper has elevated the group's profile and is making local cyclists sit up in their saddles and join in his rallying call to make cycling a larger part of the Berwick community and economy.
Having recently published his booklet 'Five Cycle Rides from Berwick upon Tweed', which is much more than just a guide to the five rides, including information on food stops, local history and advice for those who like to tour self-sufficiently.
Tony now hopes to influence the local council as Berwick Cyclists campaigns for more investment to improve on road and off-road infrastructure for cyclists. He has already generated good support from local businesses and the community, with people recognising the benefits from active travel, cycle tourism and more liveable streets in Berwick upon Tweed.
Berwick Cyclists' current campaigning goals are:
- to improve the signing and development of safer cycle routes through Berwick town centre
- to create a high-quality cycle route from Berwick south to Beal and
- to create a safe crossing point across the A1 at Cheswick Buildings
