How to become a trustee

Cycling UK is governed by a board which comprises up to 12 trustees, including the chair and vice-chair.

The board’s role is to govern Cycling UK and provide overall strategic direction to achieve its aims. The fundamental responsibility of trustees is to look after the resources given to Cycling UK by individuals and organisations, and ensure that these resources are used effectively to achieve the particular purpose for which they were given.

At least nine trustees must be members of Cycling UK, elected by the membership. The Board may also co-opt trustees to fill gaps in skills, knowledge, and experience.

Each elected trustee serves for a term of up to three years. They may put themselves forward for re-election, subject to a maximum three consecutive terms of office. We hold elections each year, as one or more of our existing trustees comes to the end of their term. Co-opted trustees are reappointed on an annual basis for a maximum of nine years.

All trustees share the same core duties, irrespective of whether they are appointed or elected officers. Trustees must act as a group, not as individuals.

2024 Trustee Elections

Applications for the 2024 trustee elections will be launched in the June/July edition of Cycle magazine.

At least nine trustees must be members of Cycling UK, elected by the membership and this year the application process will launch with the publication of the June/July magazine. Details of the process and desirable skills and experience will be included in the application pack available through this page.

Details of the shortlisted candidates and their election statement will be sent to members of Cycling UK in Cycle Magazine and voting will be launched in the October/November edition. There is one UK wide constituency, and every member has a vote in the elections for each trustee vacancy which can be done either by post or online.
