I am a chartered civil engineer and specialised in the design construction and maintenance of bridges. I finished my working life as Director of Environmental Services with Essex County Council. So I have to plead guilty to having contributed to the huge expansion of the highway network between 1960 and 2000, but by way of mitigation I did cycle to work and championed the case for improved conditions for cyclists both on the road and on separated facilities.
I joined the Board of Trustees in 2008 and from January 2011 to January 2014 I have been pleased to serve as Vice-Chair and latterly on the newly formed Executive Committee. My Cycling UK membership goes back many years when I joined to support the organisation’s campaigning. I did not ride with my local group in Chelmsford until much later but now get out most weeks and thoroughly enjoy it. I was treasurer of CTC Essex for three years and am a ride leader with the Chelmsford group.
I am enthusiastic about all aspects of Cycling UK’s activity and I am delighted that we are now so close to becoming a membership charity across the whole of Britain. I am convinced this will help us to achieve our fundamental objective of promoting cycling opportunities in all our communities with the consequential benefits for health and the environment. This is my primary motivation in volunteering to serve on the Board.
