Thousands of cyclists in cities across the UK showed their support for Space for Cycling last weekend by participating in a series of Big Rides. Meanwhile, the social media ‘Thunderclap’ on Saturday 17 May reached over 100,000 people and many local councillors have now backed the campaign’s objectives of removing the barriers to cycling.

Pudding on a great show in Derbyshire
Following the great response to last week’s release of places for RideLondon (now all sold out), we are pleased to announce that CTC has now secured 20 exclusive places in the L’Eroica rides in beautiful Bakewell on Sunday 22 June.  Living up to the town’s name, L’Eroica Britannia also features a fabulous festival of food and drink, alongside a celebration of vintage vélos. Places cost £149.99 and include an exclusive limited edition CTC heritage Merino wool jersey, worth £110, plus a host of other goodies, including post ride refreshment in our CTC Café. Funds raised will go to supporting our vital campaigning work.

Talking Italian
Bianchi by Travis Isaacs 80x80 via flickr.jpg
L’Eroica will probably see many riders on gorgeous retro Italian bikes – but do you know how to pronounce the brand names correctly? This handy guide will show you how to get your tongue round such puzzlers as Bianchi, Ciöcc, Dedacciai, Marzocchi and many more. Now all we need is someone to tell us how to say the name of professional German rider Jens Voigt

You may not be able to ride like a pro, even if you could pronounce their names, but you can at least dress like one. CTC members can obtain all the kit for the riding season ahead with an extra 15% off all dhb products at Wiggle when spending £50 or more. Just enter the code DHBX15 at checkout. Offer valid until 4pm on Thursday 29 May.

Musical chairs?
Kraftwerk via The Bike Show 80x80.jpg
Making music with bicycle parts is not an original idea but musical design artist Steven Baber creates entire works using just a machine and its accessories. If you want to hear similar tunes live, Richard Durrant also uses sounds made by bikes as inspiration and is in the middle of a UK tour. Strangely, pop band Kraftwerk, on the other hand, apparently gave up music for cycling…
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster....
Matt Adams 80x80 via London Media.Daily Mail.jpg
Conquering Box Hill in Surrey is on many riders’ bucket lists. But for one cyclist, his moment of triumph was short-lived, reported the Daily Mail. Matt Adams was taking part in the London Revolution Sportive when he reached the top of the famous London 2012 road race climb. In an effort to mimic his racing heroes, he flung his arms out to celebrate in front of a photogprapher – and promptly fell off.
Be on time with a sprocket clock

When ‘Mediconabike’ had to give up cycling a while back, she decided to turn her passion for bikes into a business. Buttons and Bicycles sells beautiful cards, prints, jewellery and art, all with a cycle-related theme, as well as stunning clocks made from discarded reclaimed bike parts. CTC members can enjoy a 10% discount off all cycling products throughout this Bank Holiday weekend.
Keeping HS2 on track
Rider on train Greater Anglia 80x80.jpg
CTC wants to make sure that if HS2 – the proposed high-speed rail link between London and the North – goes ahead, cyclists get the best deal possible. So we have ‘petitioned’ against the HS2 Phase 1 Bill, calling for the route, stations and works to be cycle-proofed, and trains to be cycle-friendly. Meanwhile, nominations are now open for the  ATOC National Cycle-Rail Awards.
