Weekly bike maintenance sessions have up and running throughout November in Colchester and they are proving extremely popular. CTC's Cycling Development Officer Richard Monk explains why he set up the project how it will expand.
CTC helping people learn about their own bikes

Master mechanic Ben Paton covers the basics of good maintenance, punctures, brakes and answers any questions too. Ben Paton manages to explain all those complicated things that I've always wondered about, like why do inner tubes have different types of valves.

Ken Winfield attended the bike maintenance sessions. He told me "Ben explained everything in language I could understand. I'd never done anything on my bike before and I left the session feeling confident that I could fix my own punctures and even make basic tweaks to my brakes. The main issue was that it just wasn't long enough!"

I decided to organise these sessions as so many people in Colchester kept telling me how they want to be able to fix their own bikes. The course was booked up really quickly so we will run another course in February 2013."

The sessions take place at Greenstead Community Centre in Colchester and cost just £10.

If you know someone who might enjoy learning the basics in a friendly environment, you can buy them a voucher for the £10 session.
