Cycling UK is unashamedly enthusiastic about getting people back on a bike, often after years and sometimes for the first time ever. Many go on to make cycling a regular part of their daily lives and the benefits are huge. Lee and Emily's story is a great example.
Emily leads a group of mums cycling with their kids

Lee and Emily joined Cycling UK rides after hearing about them from the ACE Health Trainer at Colchester Garrison.

With two young children, lots of family pressures and a tight budget, they were looking for a cheap solution to become fitter that fitted in with their busy lives.

The Cycling UK rides offered the use of children’s trailers – a perfect solution for Lee and Emily and countless other army and civilian families.

The couple bought their own bikes as they became more confident. The children really enjoyed being in the trailer and they then bought their own trailer. However, they found that the kids argued so the next step was to buy a second trailer.

Suddenly, they found that they could use the bikes to do the shopping, carrying the kids in one trailer and the shopping in another. Within a stroke, they had made it easier to travel around on a daily basis, whether it was to nursery groups, shopping or work.

I really enjoy cycling now, I have much more confidence and have made new friends."

Within weeks, Lee and Emily had both lost more than a stone each and were feeling much fitter and full of energy.

And it didn’t stop there. Lee had been looking for work and went for a job interview at a restaurant 7 miles away. The bike meant he could take the job, which previously he couldn’t have managed without a car.

Emily said: "I really enjoy cycling now, I have much more confidence and have made new friends. I feel confident enough to take my children out on the trailers on long distances and the cycle group have helped with safety and guidance. I highly recommend the group to anyone - even people who have not been on a bike before for years."

Both Lee and Emily started volunteering for Cycling UK and completed Ride Leader training provided by Cycling UK.
