- Runs outdoor business TrekWild
- Former Head of Outdoor Learning in Devon
- Specialises in MTB, skiing and climbing
- A Cycling UK trainer since 2008
Phil has been a keen cyclist since his school days - every winter he built 'trackers' from various parts, including hub brakes and fixed wheel, and spent the summer pounding around local farmland and woodland.
Before becoming Head of Outdoor Learning with Devon County Council, Phil had several jobs in youth and community work, developing programmes to introduce young people to the outdoors.
His areas of expertise include expeditions on foot and on ski, climbing and mountain biking.
His work in mountain biking brought him into contact with Cycling UK, whose learner-centred and practical approach he found to be the most successful.
Once retired from full time and corporate work, he teamed up with his wife Sally to run TrekWild, an outdoor business specialising in leader training and trips off the beaten track.
Phil says it seemed a logical progression to do the Cycling UK Leader Trainer course. It's a real bonus for him to work with such a range of experienced people; he finds the enthusiasm for leading infectious and learns something new in every course.
And thanks to the Cycling UK maintenance courses, he has updated his skills and gone full circle back to his 'tracker' building days, rescuing neglected bikes, doing them up and selling them on at cost, so that people who can’t afford a new bike have something decent and affordable to ride.
