In spring this year Great Western Railways (GWR) announced that all bikes on their high speed trains would require mandatory booking from May. Understandably there was public outcry and confusion. In October, Cycling UK and Ben Bradshaw, MP for Exeter and keen cyclist, met with Great Western Railways (GWR) to discuss current and future cycle rail policy.

CTC welcomes new bus safety programme in London

CTC has welcomed the announcement from Transport for London on 1 February of the launch of a new bus safety programme, set to incentivise safety in its contracts. CTC has called for an extension of this programme to cover the whole of the UK and to include lorries.

Eurostar says 'yes' to talks...but plans still go ahead

Eurostar has agreed to meet CTC and Mayor of London Boris Johnson’s office to discuss the controversial move to make cyclists dismantle and box up their bikes to travel. But any face-to-face talks will have to take place AFTER the new cycle-carriage policy comes into force this Sunday.

£2bn announced for new roads or bigger junctions - with almost none on cycling. Meanwhile, the Department for Transport has announced £15m for 2015-16 to be spent on cycle rail improvements, typically additional cycle parking at railway stations.

Cycling to stations doubles in 7 years
Cycling to stations has grown mostly amongst on-train users
The number of people cycling to railway stations has steadily increased over the last 7 years, figures from the National Passenger Survey, obtained by CTC, reveal.
