About this project

With its primary aims of refurbishing used bicycles and educating volunteers, Action 21’s Bike Workshop has gone from strength to strength. Donations of unwanted bicycles are saved from landfill, reconditioned and quality checked by experienced volunteers, and sold to the public as a low-cost means of sustainable transport.

The workshop’s popularity is testament to the dedicated volunteers who run it and train up new volunteer bike mechanics on an ongoing basis. On a good day, a volunteer might refurbish one bike – such is the level of quality control which goes into every renovation.  A warranty is provided with every bike sold, plus a leaflet on basic bike maintenance.

In November 2012, the Bike Workshop refurbished its 1000th bike, but this is just one of its achievements. It also does meaningful work in the local community, having donated bikes to a local school for children with learning difficulties and disabilities, and sent volunteers into local primary schools and community centres to educate children and young people on bike maintenance and personal safety.

Charity overview:

Action 21 is a local volunteer-based charity that aims to reduce the environmental impact of the Leamington and Warwick communities and raise awareness of the benefits of sustainable living.

Donated manufactured goods such as bikes, furniture, electrical goods and other household items are sold at our Re-Useful Centre, thus saving them from landfill. The income from the sale of these goods is used to inform and educate local citizens about how to reduce waste output in creative and resourceful ways. We do this by running various projects and activities focused on the issues of re-use, sustainable transport, food and sustainable energy.

As a volunteer-based charity, our achievements are substantially owed to the many people who have devoted their time and energy to our projects on a voluntary basis. Since Action 21’s beginnings in 1996, over 400 individuals have volunteered for us and we currently have over 100 regular and episodal volunteers.
