Components 101: Hub

The hub is the center part of a bike wheel. The outside casing, called the hub shell, consists of two machined flanges to which the spokes are attached. The inside of the hub contains the axle and bearings which allow the wheel to rotate smoothly. The rear hub includes splines onto which the cassette (block) is fitted.
