Third Place of the CTC Volunteer Group - Aston Hill MTB Group

Aston Hill Mountain Bike Club was nominated for the Best Voluntary Group Achievement of 2012 after ‘Surface to Air’, the downhill mountain bike trail was built by volunteers from the club.

The trail replaced one of the existing downhill trails and in doing so, brought the area up to par with some of the best downhill sites in England.

The club had to overcome a number of challenges, not least creating a timber retaining wall for long sections of trail and accessing the steep hillside on foot and with diggers and dumpers to both build and surface the trail. This work was made even more challenging as they had to put up with one of the wettest summers on record for 100 years.

‘Surface to Air’ was completed late in the summer of 2012 and opened in November; the short video showcasing the trail has had just under 80,000 views so far . Since the trail opened, not a weekend has gone by where Aston Hill hasn’t been busy with new and returning riders coming up to ride the new trail.

A testament to the work of the club, committee and the dedicated band of volunteers whose sweat and spadework went into creating Surface to Air.
