The Wellhouse Bike Club operate their weekly cycle project from a local sports facility called The Hub, a community education and employment facility offering a wide range of services, activities and support for everyone in the community. The Wellhouse Bike Club is run by two members of the Youth Development Team, John and David, who do so on a Sunday in their own time. The club offers cycle training in an area where the local schools have decided not to enter into the Scottish Cycle Training Scheme.
They work with young people who initially have limited or no cycle experience, teaching them the skills required to cycle safely on the road and then progress onto group bike rides in the area. Wellhouse is in the east end of Glasgow. The area is notorious for the wrong reasons, including incidences of violence. A fear of territorial ‘ownership’ of certain areas in the east prevents many young people from moving freely around there and the rest of the city. The Wellhouse Bike Club aims to show young people that these territorial boundaries are self imposed and un-necessary. They want to show their young members that the wealth of opportunity and experience available in Glasgow can be achieved by bike!
Their club offers young people a sense of freedom – arguably the best thing about cycling!
