In 2009, Sally Pearson, Jane Chapman and Sue Hawkins of Bristol CTC directly encouraged, trained and supported 80 cyclists to go way beyond their previous cycling achievements. Between them they organised, administered and led 82 rides over a six-month period.
The 'Get Gorge-ous Cycle Challenge' aimed to encourage people out on their bikes on a regular basis to improve their fitness and well-being. The ‘challenge’ was to do a series of rides, starting from 5 miles in length and building up to a 50-mile ride from Bristol to Cheddar, up the Gorge and back to Bristol in June 2009.
Many of the participants were either nervous cyclists, or new to cycling. 80 riders completed the challenge and of these 60 have joined the CTC and these and more have continued to cycle since.
The high level of completion, from first ride through the training rides to the challenge is testament to the encouragement and enjoyment that was provided. These fantastic ladies have made a huge impact on cycling in Bristol over the past year with their ‘Get Gorge-ous Cycle Challenge’.
