They have brought the club into the 21st century, making sure that cycling is for all, regardless of their abilities, gender, age or background. There can’t be many clubs in the UK who can boast of 45-50 riders setting forth on a Saturday morning for an enjoyable bike ride. John and Beryl had the foresight to encourage beginners and “returners to cycling” and adapted rides to suit their capabilities. John has looked after the complete beginners (of all ages) and taught them how to ride a bike so that they would be comfortable enough to join the slow ride on Saturday mornings. He gives people confidence with his patience and encouragement.
Because of John and Beryl, we now have a ride every day of the week except for Mondays. Excellent organisers/managers, they deal tirelessly with H.Q. paper work; keeping club members’ membership updated; answering phone calls from would-be cyclists; dealing with publicity, liaising with Birmingham Council on cycling issues, reporting potholes and balancing the books efficiently each year.
They have organised numerous very successful Club weekends away, searching out routes and refreshment stops. In addition because of their huge capacity and talent for organising, for many years, John and Beryl organised the Northern Audax, the Northern Jumble Sale; Meriden weekend and the Club 100.
John and Beryl have fertile minds and are always thinking of new ideas as to how they can improve and build on the running of the club. They are so enthusiastic about cycling and want the world to realise what a difference it can make to one’s life. They want people to realise the immense pleasure cycling can offer.
